SWEET CORN MEAL MUDHEAD KACHINA BY HERB TALAHAFTEWA (HOPI)
Herb Talahaftewa was born in 1954 and is a member of the Corn Clan. He has been active carving since 1965. His work is in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum.
"Mud-head Kachinas are probably the most well-known of all the Hopi Kachinas. They appear in almost every Hopi ceremony as clowns, interlocutors, announcers of dances, drummers, and many other roles. Koyemsi are usually the ones that play games with the audience to the accompaniment of rollicking tunes. [These games] most closely resemble parlor games and the rewards are prizes of food or clothing." Kachinas- A Hopi Artist's Documentary by Barton Wright
