Howard Nelson was born and raised in Winslow, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. He is a member of the Tsinnijinnie Clan and has been actively making jewelry since the 1970s. He is a primarily self-taught artist, learning the techniques of silversmithing through observation and experimentation. His work is sought after by collectors and he has received numerous awards and recognition, including the Southwest Association of Indian Artists Fellowship in 1994.

He is primarily known for his traditional and contemporary gold and silver jewelry, exhibiting techniques in fabrication, wire set, appliqué, overlay, inlay and 1930 style revival jewelry.
