Miniature chipmunk/butterfly pottery by Joseph Lonewolf (Santa Clara)

Joseph Lonewolf was born in 1932 and is a member of the Corn Clan. He was the son of Camilio Tafoya and Agapita Silva who both taught him pottery making at a young age. He worked as a machinist until an injury forced him to quit. He returned home to Santa Clara Pueblo and began making pottery and at the age of 39 decided to become a full-time potter. In 1974, a book on his work was published, which introduced his style to a wide audience. His work is characterized by miniature forms on which precisely carved or incised designs relating to animals and ancient Mimbres images decorate the surface. He is credited with developing two tone pottery which required only one firing (previously two firings were required to achieve two tones). Lonewolf fired his work traditionally and used Colorado slips to achieve various colors such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, buff, brown, and black. Lonewolf passed away in 2014 and he passed his knowledge on to his children Susan Snowflake Romero, Rosemary Apple Blossom and Greg Lonewolf who all make miniature incised pottery.
