POTTERY VASE BY FANNIE NAMPEYO (HOPI)

Fannie Nampeyo was born in 1900 in the Corn Clan at First Mesa and died in 1987. She was the youngest daughter of the famous Hopi potter Nampeyo who is credited with reviving designs from old pottery sherds called Kayenta Anasazi and Sikyatki and was the first Hopi potter to gain international recognition for her pottery. Fannie assisted her mother in making pottery and when her mother's eyesight failed in her later years, she took over the design work on the pots. She married Vinton Polacca in 1920 and they had 7 children, some of whom are also noted potters such as Iris Youvella, Elva Nampeyo and Thomas Polacca. Her work has been collected by the University of Oklahoma Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
