STERLING SILVER COUD EARRINGS BY DUANE MAKTIMA (LAGUNA/HOPI)
Laguna Pueblo/Hopi artist Duane Maktima has been making jewelry for over 30 years but he did not begin this career young. During his studies at Northern Arizona University, he became interested in the art of metalsmithing, eventually receiving his Bachelors in Fine Arts in 1982. He draws inspiration from his own culture as well as the cultures he experienced through collections at the Museum of Northern Arizona. He has won many awards throughout his career and has served on the national steering committee for the Society of North American Goldsmiths as well as being a chairman for the All Indian Pueblo Arts and Culture Coalition.
He is well known for his richly textured metal surfaces and striking stone inlay combinations that utilize unique materials like jasper, charorite and ironwood.
