DUAL SHALAKOS KACHINA DOLL BY LAWRENCE ACADIZ (HOPI)
Lawrence Acadiz was born in 1964 in Tucson, Arizona. He is a member of the Deer and Katsina Clans. Lawrence attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico to study painting. It was there that he first started carving Kachina dolls after being encouraged by his roommate. His work has been collected by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC and he was the featured artist at the 2005 Southwest Indian Fair in Tucson, Arizona. He makes his home in Tucson but regularly travels to First Mesa on the Hopi Reservation in northern Arizona to participate in ceremonies and gather cottonwood root.
