In coiled baskets, the process is begun at the center of the basket and grows through spiral rounds that attach to the round before. The coiling technique is actually a sewing technique, as the weaver often uses an awl to punch holes into the foundation as they sew the coils. The foundation of coiled baskets is made up of one or more plant fibers (often plant shoots, bundles of grass, or a combination of grass and sticks). In the use of this technique, designs are not made by the changing of the weave, but by using different colored sewing thread. The Salishan peoples of the Pacific Northwest, use a technique called imbrication, which uses strips of grass or bark under the stitching on the outer surface of the basket.
