Sally Black (b. 1959) was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation near the border between Arizona and Utah. She has been actively weaving baskets for more than 40 years, learning the art of basket weaving from her mother, famed weaver Mary Holiday Black, who is credited with reviving the art of Navajo basket making. While Sally Black is consistently inspired and influenced by her mother, her own designs have slightly strayed as she incorporates more whimsical and abstracted elements into her basketry. She is primarily known for her colorful contemporary basketry, that incorporates the Yei spirit, wedding basket designs and creation stories, such as 'the coyote placing the stars.'
