Hoote from Zuni kachina doll by Ryon Polequaptewa (Hopi)
Ryon is from Shungopavi Village on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona and is a member of the Sun Clan. He resides in Phoenix, AZ. Ryon carves traditional style Katsina dolls as seen from personal experience. Each one-of-a-kind figure is imbued with humor, imagination and character. Ryon learned the art from Edward Seechoma.
Much of Ryon's current work is inspired by the Kachina dolls of Wilson Tawaquaptewa (1871- 1960) who intentionally created dolls that were not exact representations of the Kachina dancers in order to protect their sacred nature.
