Multi-stone pottery shard pendant with black & red coral and Morenci turquoise by Mark Stevens (Laguna)
Mark Stevens is an enrolled tribal member of Laguna Pueblo, one of 19 Pueblos in New Mexico. Mark is 1/2 Laguna (maternal side) and 1/2 Italian (paternal side). Mark's maternal grandparents are from Laguna Pueblo while his paternal Grandparents hail from Canton, Ohio. Stevens is a metalsmith who has made his share of Native American jewelry over the past 12 years. But what Mark is known for, worldwide, are his pottery shard replicas. Powerful, contemporary jewelry pieces fashioned after the ancient artifacts. Artifacts of broken pottery dating back hundreds of years - what remains of our indigenous ancestors. Each piece of jewelry is painstakingly fabricated by hand using an overlay technique. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and will never be duplicated. Mark honors the talent of our ancestors, by reviving their artwork in a contemporary medium and preserving their precious designs.
