The Heard Museums C.G. Wallace Collection is considered one of the most well documented collections of Zuni silverwork in this country. Blue Gem, White Metal: Carvings and Jewelry from the C.G. Wallace Collectionö is a complementary publication to the Heard Museums 1998 exhibit of the same name. Showcasing early 20th century Zuni and Navajo jewelry, silverwork and carvings from the collection, the publication includes historical photographs of Wallace and such well-known artists as Leo Poblano, Dan Simplicio and Della Casa Appa. Areas of jewelry making such as mosaic overlay and inlay, casting and cluster and row work are described in-depth. Over the years, Wallace amassed a collection of Zuni jewelry totaling 2,500 pieces, 525 of which he donated to the Heard Museum in 1975. Blue Gem, White Metal includes examples from the collection that illustrate the quality and diversity of Zuni and Navajo jewelry. Work represented ranges from necklaces, bracelets and rings to pins and bow guards as well as stone carvings of people and animals. The exhibition and accompanying publication for Blue Gem, White Metal was organized by Deborah Slaney, Heard Museum Registrar from 1991 to 2001. Martin Sullivan, Ph.D was director of the Heard Museum from 1990 to 1999 and is currently the CEO and director for Historic St. MaryÆs City in Maryland.
