Handwoven Wide Ruins rug by Cindy Roan (Navajo)

The Wide Ruins design evolved from the Chinle but is much more involved. It is marked by many thin bands of colors alternating with wider bands which frequently contain geometric designs. There can be very little difference between a Chinle design and a Wide Ruins and it sometimes comes down to where the weaver lives as to what designation the rug receives. Traditionally, Chinle designs have wide bands with simple geometric designs such as squash blossoms alternating with thin lines of colors.

As with the evolution of most art forms, weavers are branching out and will often weave a rug that may have elements of more than one pattern. When we have a rug that does not fall into one of the traditional designations, we rely on the weaver's preference.

This rug measures 48 inches long by 28 1/2 inches wide.
