Sandpainting by Lester Johnson (Navajo) Sandpaintings have their roots in Navajo healing ceremonies that are designed to restore health, balance and harmony. Today, many Navajo artists create stunning pictorial sandpaintings on boards using a variety of ground stones including sandstone, ocher, charcoal, gypsum and turquoise. Sandpainters use fine brushes, glue and colored sand to create intricate pictures that often include yei figures, whirling logs, plants and other traditional imagery. Some artists make sandpaintings using more contemporary designs like pottery and landscapes. The process results in distinctive decorative works of art that make excellent, durable wall hangings. This magnificent sandpainting measures 9.5 inches by 6.5 inches.
