Alvarez is known for the use of the finest natural turquoise. As a child, Alvarez watched his Uncle Leandro create handmade silverware. At age 14, he was hired by Nez Pierce promoter Chief George Pierre, a grandson of Chief Joseph. Alvarez made jewelry and helped Chief Pierre with heavy work and at art shows. The experience prepared Alvarez for a long career as an artist. Alvarez has recently been honored as one of 25 American Indian artists at the Philidelphia Museum of Art.
