Kachina Doll-Old Style

Hopi Kachina dolls, or Tihus, as they are called by the Hopi people, are carved figures representing Hopi Kachina ceremonies take place between January and July, and their prime function is to assist in the prayers for rain. During these ceremonies, Kachina dolls are given to young girls from Kachina dancers. The dolls also are used to teach children about the Hopi religion. Many different Hopi Kachina dolls are carved today for sale to the public. Made from the roots of the cottonwood trees, the dolls are intricately carved and often include fine details. Some Kachina dolls exhibit stylized forms that are less detailed, while others reflect a modern trend toward more active, lifelike figures. Some artists are creating more abstract sculptural works of art. Few American Indian crafts appeal so powerfully to both the eye and the imagination as these popular creations.
